Re-Ability Benin

Location:

Parakou, Benin

Area of intervention:

Ability in physical rehabilitation

Partner:

A2D Prosthetics, Parakou

The rehabilitation situation in Benin is particularly critical, mainly due to the fact that the healthcare system is fee-based, which excludes a large portion of families from accessing treatment, as it’s too expensive for the majority of the population. Moreover, nearby infrastructure and accessible materials for the production of prosthetics and orthotics are lacking.

In 2023, during a training workshop in Ghana, the SwissABILITY team had the opportunity to meet Serge Kinchéssou Alladagbe. Serge has a long career in the rehabilitation profession and extensive work experience in several countries. He worked in Italy for Orthosanity, in Tunisia for Orthotechnique, in Mali for the Center Père Bernard Verspieren, in Togo for CNAO, until he founded his own orthopedic laboratory in Parakou, in the north of Benin: the “A2D Prosthetics” centre.

Following Serge’s desire and the country’s real need, SwissABILITY was asked to contribute to the implementation of a new, innovative, but low-cost technology in Benin.

SwissABILITY responded to the request and intervened by donating materials and other components to the A2D Prosthetics orthopedic center in Parakou, to provide rehabilitation services for at least 50 amputees in need of care.
