In early October, SwissABILITY organized an important double training for orthopedic professionals in two different locations in Tanzania: the Mwanza Prosthetics and Orthotics Workshop (MPOW), in Mwanza, and the Desire Charitable Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre (DCHRC), in Kibaha. Thanks to our valuable Tanzanian technical trainers, Nsengiyumva Magogwa and Claude Mushi, we were able to train 32 orthopedic professionals.

The initiative consolidated SwissABILITY’s presence in the territory, offering participants new skills, that can be used to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. These training events helped SwissABILITY to disseminate its prosthetic solutions more broadly, while expanding its network of collaboration and partnerships.

Thanks to these two trainings, we were able to profoundly change the lives of many people with disabilities. People who, without our intervention, would never have had the chance to receive a prosthesis. We offered them not only physical support, but also the chance to take back their lives, with the concrete possibility of regaining their independence and their daily lives. During the two trainings in Mwanza and Kibaha, we managed to fabricate nine prostheses for eight patients, including one case of bilateral amputation.

SwissABILITY also had the honor of participating in the fifth conference organized by the Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists of Tanzania (APOT). Our Executive Director Roberto Agosta-during the first day of the conference-gave an interesting panel entitled “Transtibial Prosthesis Management Using Monolimb Technology Technique.”

We are well established in Tanzania and are determined to continue supporting its rehabilitation sector. SwissABILITY’s goal is to make a difference to the thousands of amputees
who still live with little prospect of obtaining a prosthesis. There are other such people who, despite adversity, look ahead, discounting what has been, but dreaming of what will be.
