Little steps, huge changes

Location:
Kenya, Mozambico, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda
Area of intervention:
Ability in physical rehabilitation
This project is specifically aimed at children with amputations, one of the most vulnerable and least protected groups on the continent. In many African contexts, amputee children do not receive the medical and social support they need. For this reason, the initiative seeks to ensure access to functional prostheses, rehabilitation assistance, and dignified support on their path to independence.

In many regions of Africa, poverty is not only an economic condition—it is a barrier that affects health, education, and human dignity. The highest price is often paid by children, innocent victims of wars, landmines, accidents, untreated infections, congenital diseases, or even snake bites. Too many of them are forced to live a childhood marked by pain, immobility, and abandonment caused by their disability.

Being an amputee as a child means:

  • not being able to walk to school,
  • not being able to play or take part in social life,
  • living in isolation and facing discrimination,
  • and having a future compromised in terms of autonomy and inclusion.

Intervening during childhood means breaking this cycle of exclusion. In this context, SwissABILITY considers it essential to promote this project by offering:

  • timely rehabilitation,
  • prostheses that are suitable and adjustable as the child grows,
  • and above all, hope for a dignified and independent life.
