Orthopedic training program in Mozambique

Duration:

One or more training weeks each year

Location:

Mozambique

Beneficiaries:

At least 10 orthopedic technicians and 15 patients for each training

Area of intervention:

Ability in physical rehabilitation

The national ortho-prosthetic service in Mozambique remains the weak link in healthcare services, often neglected by both the government and international institutions. Despite repeated promises of improvement from the Mozambique rehabilitative medicine sector over the years, the demand for prostheses far exceeds the capacity of existing centers to respond. This disparity is also reflected in orthotics services and in rehabilitative initiatives in general.

In the country, people with disabilities, particularly amputees, do not have adequate or economically accessible services for three main reasons:
1) Lack of personnel with sufficient skills.
2) Lack of appriopriate technologies and materials.
3) Lack of infrastructure.

With this training project, SwissABILITY aims to address the first of the three main obstacles, which is the lack of services, specifically the lack of personnel with sufficient skills.

In 2022 and 2023, SwissABILITY has already been able to carry out three basic training modules for orthopedic
technicians of four cities in the country: Pemba, Nampula, Lichinga e Quelimane, increasing the technical skills of 23 orthopedic technicians.

During 2024, it will be organized another training in Mozambique, at theHospital Provincial de Inhambane. The project aims to provide adequate orthopedic training to a group of 15 Mozambican orthopedic technicians who will, in turn, be able to promote the skills learned during the courses to other young professionals. At the same time, the project will contribute to providing new prostheses for approximately 20 amputees.
