In Malawi, almost three-quarters of the population live in a state of extreme poverty, with less than $1.25 per day. Of these, nearly 10% coexist with one or more forms of disabilities, including amputations at birth or during their lifetime. Amputations in Malawi primarily affect young people during the economically most productive period of their lives. The main causes are attributed to road accidents, poorly treated injuries, and fractures.

Throughout the country, there are only three functioning orthopedic centres, and despite the great need for rehabilitative services, there is a shortage of orthopedic materials for the production of prostheses for amputee patients. Therefore, it is more urgent than ever to intervene to provide adequate rehabilitative services to all those in need. SwissABILITY’s local partners have urged us to provide support, both in the supply of materials and in creating long-term projects in the future.

SwissABILITY is not new to the country: in 2021, its Executive Director, Roberto Agosta, organized a first training for rehabilitation professionals at Mzuzu Central Hospital. On this occasion, he was able to strengthen the partnership with Mark Ndagonera, Director of Mzuzu Central Hospital, and envision a future for rehabilitation in Malawi.

In 2023, SwissABILITY intervened in the country by donating feet and other components to the orthopedic centre at Mzuzu Central Hospital, covering the center’s needs for at least one year and providing services to the hundreds of amputated individuals in need of care.

SwissABILITY’s intention is to expand the rehabilitation support project in Malawi, continuing to send orthopedic materials and organizing training for professionals.
